Berry Pie Baking Contest
There were seven entries in the first ever Berry Pie Baking Contest at the Piqua Community Farmers Market on Thursday, June 24. The winner of the contest was Bill Weldy of Piqua with his Raspberry / Bing Cherry pie. There were two second place finishers Karen Hess of Covington and Dee Gastineau of Susie’s Big Dipper in Piqua. Karen Hess baked a gooseberry pie and Dee Gastineau submitted a traditional strawberry pie. The judges for the contest were all representatives of the YMCA Senior Center and included Tony Rego (left), Irene Clark (center) and Lester Bixler (right). This coming week the Farmers Market will be visited by the Friends of Johnston Farm. The Piqua Community Farmers Market is held each Thursday from 2:30 – 6:30 in Canal Place (next to the Piqua Daily Call) in downtown Piqua.
